More details below:
Size & Distance
Size

* Diameter:  2159 miles - Circumference:  6783 miles.

* The 5th largest moon in our solar system.

* Approximately 240,000 miles from Earth and estimated to be moving away from the earth at about 1.5" (inch) per year.

Geology
Geode

* The moons solid iron core is estimated to be approximately 150 miles in radius (so 300 miles across).

* A partially molten layer with a thickness of 93 miles surrounds the iron core.

* The 'mantle' (partially molten next layer) runs up to the underside of the crust.

* Strangely the near side crust is approximately 45 miles thick whereas the far side is approximately 95 mile thick!

Atmosphere / Weather
Weather

* The Moon has a very thin and weak atmosphere, called an exosphere. It does not provide any protection from the Sun's radiation or impacts from meteoroids.

Orbit & Rotation
Orbit Size Distance

* Because the Moon rotates at about the same time it takes to go around the Earth it appears to look as though it is not rotating but it does.

* Takes 27 Earth days to orbit around the Earth

* Although we refer to the dark side of the Moon because it does rotate then the other side to what we see does get illuminated by the Sun.  (for lunar eclipses click here)
